Camping in the trees

A new school approach to camping that includes some of the old school gear is tree camping. You’ll still need a sleeping bag, pillow, and a backpack; but, instead of a sleeping mat to keep your body comfortably cushioned from the ground, you’ll be in a hammock. There are several tents that you can choose from which get suspended from the trees. The best part about tree camping is that you are completely off the ground, so you don’t have to worry about condensation or dew from the ground getting your gear all wet. Neither will you be at the same level as snails, slugs, snakes, and other creepy crawlers. Here are a few of the tents you can use that will get you camping with a new-age travel experience.

The tensile tree tent

The tensile tree tent is the first tent that I came across when I thought about ways to camp in the trees. This tent comes in a hammock set up which is unique. It is made out of parachute fabric, with the main support system being seat-belt material. Each triangle end comes with a sewed-in ratchet strap and a spliced loop nylon rope webbing that gets set up around the tree. The way you set up the tensile tree tent or hammock is you need to find trees that are in an even triangle configuration. This can be in the middle of the woods, at the peak of a waterfall, on top of a mountain overlook, or anywhere you choose

A unique feature of the tensile tree hammock is that it can sleep three people but. also come with a triangular zipper floor hatch. You can stack one two or three different tents on top of out another as long as the trees you choose support the weight to be able to climb up through to different levels. Depending on the number of tents you use you can comfortably sleep an additional amount of people. I like using the mesh hammocks because they allow dirt and moisture to fall through to the ground, plus it drys quickly

What I do first is I set up the mesh tensile tree hammock for the first level. Then a second hammock for the second-level followed by the tensile tree tent at the third level to shed the elements off the first two levels. Each level takes about the same amount of time to set up as regular ground tents unless you are setting them high in the trees. You can then climb in between all three tents through the central zipper floor hatch. I like to store my camping gear on the base hammock below to free up the second and third-level hammock/tent for lounging or sleeping.

You can purchase many accessories with these tents including a collapsible rope ladder, Cup or bottle holder, and separate storage pockets.

Portaledges

These sleeping platforms were designed and constructed out of lightweight aluminum for rock climbers who set out on a multiple-day climbs. A portaledge is a covered platform that’s supported by a metal frame and suspended from a single central attachment point. They come in several different sizes to accommodate 1 to 4 people.

Rain drop-shaped tree tent

These tents were designed for camping enthusiasts that also get set up in the same way as the portaledge in regards to a central attachment point. They are usually about 13 ft tall while being made out of lightweight aluminum, yet wrapped in a canvas outer skin. It has a secure base platform with a round mattress that can sleep a family of up to 4.

Conclusion

Camping is very popular with people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a great way to get out in nature while staying physically active. I really like the new school approach to camping which is tree camping because it simply gets you off the ground. The ground is hard while tree tents are cushiony and forgiving on the body. Tree camping gets you up in the air for a great view of the landscape. My desire is that you enjoyed this article. Any comments or questions please leave me a comment or email.
